Virtually Here
So here I am sat at my almost new laptop. I say almost new as it had a new hard disc and now has Windows 7 - I still need a new mouse as the scroll wheel on this one only scrolls in one direction but it's not a huge problem.
Now normally a process of installing a new hard disc would involve (if you are smart) making sure you had a backup of all your data and then the labourious process of copying it back and reinstalling program, hunting around for license keys etc and quite likely a lot of stress. But not this time. Oh no. And it wasn't because my darling husband did it all. I mean he did do it all but that's not the point.
The point is that all intents and purposes my old laptop still exists and all the useful and not so useful files are still there. And my new laptop is all clean and shiney and only (well for the moment anyway) has what I need on it and I can log on to it whenever I need to. How cool is that?!
How, I hear you cry, have you done this? Well it's all thanks to my hubby (yes he is the really smart one when it comes to IT, but I was smart enough to marry him!)
He is the king of VMWare and virtualisation. Basically, he cloned my laptop and a copy of it sits on the HD of our home server. It doesn't know it's a clone and behaves just like its a normal computer. To quote a certain Meercat, "Simples"
Of course there's a lot more to it than that from a technical point of view and for those of you who are that way inclined, I point you to my husband's site http://www.lauwerys.co.uk/ and the offical VMWare site www.VMware.com
